The Virtue Of Being Late
Dear Ms. Duberman,
I started my band almost 17 years ago. I don’t remember knowing of any Creative Communication Consultant; I don’t think that title had been invented yet. Up until then I had been in bands that uttered their innermost feelings through the amazing possibilities of song. Not dance, just song. In English.
But I already knew that nothing really good could come out of that. And then I heard another band, ironically called The Scene, that sang in Dutch. It was an Aha-Erlebnis, the ultimate eye-opener, maybe even a true revelation, and I went on a mission to form my own band that did just that: singing in my native language.
After all these years, I think it’s pretty safe to say that I succeeded, and this band, BLØF, went on to be bigger than we could have ever imagined back then.
So, Ms. Duberman, I guess I thank you for being late. If there would have been anything remotely like Rock Your English!, then I would probably have written my lyrics in English, and Paskal might never have sung a word in Dutch. Maybe it would have been great, maybe not. But anyhow, in a weird way you are responsible for BLØF singing in Dutch. You simply weren’t there yet to convince us otherwise.
But finally, you have arrived. Time’s a strange thing. It’s simply great to have someone like you in the Dutch music scene. We need you!
Well here’s to you, Ms. Duberman. For being late, not just fashionably.
Yours,
Peter (BLØF). |
